Materials, Forms and Characteristics for Beverage Packaging

August 16,2022

Beverage, dairy products and condiments used in packaging, glass containers, metal, plastic, paper and other materials have been applied to beverage packaging, metal cans, PET bottles, PP bottles, Tetra Pak, Comet packets, roof packs, black and white film and other packaging powder.

Plastic packaging: now in the beverage market, plastic bottles in tea drinks, carbonated drinks, fruit juice, bottled water and other packaging applications occupy a major position, specifically, and divided into the following materials.

PE (polyethylene)

PE is the world's largest producer of synthetic resin, but also a large consumption of plastic packaging materials. Polyethylene products are subdivided into low density, medium density and high density. Using the characteristics of PE heat sealing performance, the production of a variety of composite materials made of containers, can hold a variety of beverages such as fruit juice.

Identifying characteristics: Generally speaking, PE packaging feels smooth, soft and lubricious texture some, with bite teeth appear slightly soft.

PP (polypropylene)

The development of transparent packaging bottles of polypropylene is a hot spot in plastic packaging at home and abroad in recent years. With the successful development of a transparent modifier-nucleating agent, adding 0.1% to 0.4% sorbitol xylene (benzaldehyde) nucleating agent in ordinary PP, the production of highly transparent PP bottles can be widely used for heat sterilization such as juice concentrate and another beverage packaging that requires a high-temperature filling, its price is suitable, pressure and temperature resistance, is PS, ABS, PET, PE bottles. ABS, PET, and PE bottles of the new rival.

Identifying characteristics: Generally speaking, PP has a hard texture, feels slightly rough, and its crease will be white after folding, and the color is whiter than PE.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

PVC can be roughly divided into three categories: hard products, soft products, and paste products. PVC bottles produced by the injection pulling and blowing method have no seam lines and the walls are thin and uniform and can hold aerated beverages such as cola and soft drinks; PVC bottles produced by the extrusion blowing method are only suitable for holding fruit juice and mineral water.

Polyester (PET or PETP)

PET bottle produced by the two-axis extension blow molding method has the characteristics of "large capacity, transparent, intuitive, light and easy to open, refrigerated, portable, sturdy and recyclable" and so on, which provides a broad market prospect for its development. From the perspective of the world's major beverage countries, the share of PET bottles in the packaging of carbonated beverages, juice drinks, tea drinks, and bottled water is more than 70%.

Identifying characteristics: with good transparency, high surface gloss, and glass-like appearance, it is a suitable plastic bottle to replace glass bottles.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE)

It is a thermoplastic resin with high crystallinity and non-polarity. HDPE in its raw state has a milky white appearance and is somewhat translucent in thin sections. It includes processes such as sheet extrusion, film extrusion, pipe or profile extrusion, blow molding, injection molding, and rotational molding.

Easy-pull cans (two-piece cans, three-piece cans): beverage packaging cans are divided into two-piece cans and three-piece cans. Two-piece cans with aluminum alloy plate are mainly used for carbonated beverage packaging, and three-piece cans with tin-plated thin steel plate (tinplate) is mainly used for non-carbonated beverage packaging.
